About Kunkle: Kunkle Valve is a leading manufacturer of Pressure and Safety Relief Valves for industrial and commercial applications, including steam, air, liquid, cryogenics and non-hazardous gases. Kunkle delivers quality products from cryogenic to high temperature and vacuum to high pressure Steam, Air, Gas, and Liquid applications.

Kunkle safety and relief valve products range in size from 1/4-inch NPT through 6-inch flange and are suitable for services ranging from cryogenic to 850° F at set pressures ranging from vacuum to 7,500 psig. Kunkle valves are available in a wide range of materials including Brass, Bronze, Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Cast Iron, and Aluminum.

Kunkle Valve safety and relief valve products are available for ASME Section I, Section IV, Section VIII, and Section XIII services with relief capacities certified by the National Board. In addition, Kunkle offers a range of non-code products and each valve, both code and non-code is set, tested, and re-tested to customer specifications and then sealed at the factory to prevent tampering.

Historical Events: E.B. Kunkle worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad during a time when serious injury and mechanical problems could result from over-pressure of locomotive engines. In 1875, Erastus Boise Kunkle revolutionized the industry when he invented the lock-up pop safety valve designed to relieve steam engine pressure. In 1876, Kunkle began manufacturing the valve through E.B. Kunkle & Co., proprietors of the Fort Wayne Safety Valve Works.

E.B. Kunkle, a machinist, was a productive inventor as well. In addition to the lock-up pop safety valve, other inventions included a water gauge, a steam gauge, an improved egg beater, and gauge-cock valves.

This Fort Wayne Safety Valve Works model 86E 1 1/4" Lock-up Pop Safety Valve is stamped with Kunkle's original patent date of 1875. Included here is a 19th century Kunkle advertisement.
